UPDATED: Bomb Threat at Wilmington Plaza Thursday Afternoon

Police say the threat was received by store employees, plaza was evacuated and K9 units were brought in to search the property.

Wilmington Police and fire were on the scene of a situation happening in the Market Basket Plaza on Main Street since just after 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Police issued a statement just after 6 p.m. on the situation saying they responded to Market Basket for a reported threat to the property received by store employees. Market Basket and surrounding stores were evacuated as a safety precaution.

K9 Units from the Massachusetts State Police and the Transit Police responded and provided assistance in a search of the property. The threat was not found to be credible. But they are asking anyone with any information to contact police.

The building is being swept by three K9s. Wilmington Police have not confirmed what is currently happening yet.

The situation is being reported as a bomb threat on the Greater Boston Dist. 5/13 Mutual Aid Radio Incident Page. According to the post, the threat was for the plaza itself.

Some residents reported the plaza had been evacuated, but about 5:15 p.m. officials were letting people back into the buildings within the plaza, except for Market Basket.

One resident who was shopping in Market Basket, told Wilmington Patch she was in the store when the alarm went off and had to leave her groceries at the register. They told her at the time it would be an hour. She went back in just after 5:30 p.m. and it’s still all blocked off.

A resident across the street at Starbucks told Wilmington Patch there are cones and police tape visible in the parking lot.

North Reading and Tewksbury Police are in town helping with other calls in town.

Just after 5:15 p.m., officers were headed to the Registry of Motor Vehicles where the panic alarm just sounded.
