Stoneham, MA – On Tuesday, September 16, 2025, Stephen Ternullo, candidate for State Representative in the 31st Middlesex District (Stoneham and Winchester), attended a meeting of Stoneham’s Override Study Committee (OSC) to press state officials on legislative accountability.

Ternullo urged full implementation of Massachusetts Ballot Question 1, approved by 72% of voters statewide and 73% in Stoneham in November 2024, which mandates an audit of the state legislature.

A U.S. Army veteran and longtime Stoneham resident, Ternullo criticized local officials for obstructing the process and emphasized that the legislature should meet the same transparency standards as communities like Stoneham and Winchester, which undergo annual public audits. He cited findings from State Auditor Diana DiZoglio that uncovered millions in waste, fraud, and abuse, including Medicaid fraud and taxpayer funds directed toward migrant housing.

While Rep. Michael Day remained silent on the matter, Sen. Jason Lewis dismissed the measure as “unconstitutional,” despite its approval for the ballot by Democratic Attorney General Andrea Campbell.

“The people have spoken,” said Ternullo. “If Beacon Hill politicians have nothing to hide, they should respect the voters’ will and allow the audit to move forward.”

The exchange highlighted the growing divide between voters’ demand for transparency and the resistance of entrenched incumbents on Beacon Hill.
