Melting Snow is still stormwater!

Now that the storm is over, it’s a good time to go out and find the catch basin and fire hydrant nearest to your house and clear ice and snow away from it.  This helps yourself and your neighbors!  There are over 4,000 City-owned storm drains in Woburn, and over 7,000 over all!  (The ones that are not maintained by the City are either State or privately owned.)  Woburn’s DPW crews try to clear them off, but with that many drains to clear, they can’t get to them all before the next storm!  The simplest way to keep melting ice and snow from re-freezing in front of your driveway is to keep the storm drain catch basins clear, so that extra water has someplace to go!  So take a minute if you can, and if you know there’s a catch basin near you, clear it of ice, snow and leaves!

Another great way you can help, is to shovel the snow from around fire hydrants!  Do you have a fire hydrant in front of your house?  There are almost 2,000 of them around the City.  If you do, taking a few minutes now to shovel a 3-ft space around it could save precious time in case there’s a fire!
