Lone Bomber Blows Up Woburn ATM: Cops

The Woburn police called in the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad after the damage was found.

WOBURN, MA — A lone bomber blew up a Woburn ATM early Thursday morning, police said.

The damage to the ATM on Mishawum Road was discovered about 9 a.m. after officers responded to a "report of a prior tampering with an exterior Automated Teller Machine," the Woburn Police Department said in a media release.

"Upon arrival, officers discovered the drive-through ATM sustained damage from what appears to be the result of an unknown destructive device or a pipe bomb," the release said.

"At the request of Woburn Police, the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad and FBI Boston’s special agent bomb technicians responded to the scene," according to the release.

Investigators determined "that during the early morning hours, a lone male placed an object on the ATM and quickly exited the bank," the release said. "Moments later, the device detonated causing an explosion to occur."

No one was injured,but the bomber remains at large, police said.

"At this time, we do not believe there is a threat to public safety," according to the release, which noted the FBI is continuing the investigation.
