Middlesex DA Hosting Drug Destruction Event
Wednesday's program will feature the district attorney and numerous police departments safely disposing of prescription medicines.

In continuing efforts to combat drug and opiate abuse in the county, the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office will be holding a drug destruction event tomorrow.
The drug destruction event will take place at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, July 1, at Covanta Energy, Inc., located at 100 Recovery Way in Haverhill. The event will allow for the safe disposal of prescription medications collected from drug take-back programs, according to the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office.
The event will feature the county DA, Marian Ryan, and 14 police departments from across Middlesex County. The drug destruction event will take place to combat the illegal use and abuse of prescription drugs “epidemic” in the state, the DA’s office said. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, more than 52 million people over age 12 have used prescription drugs non-medically. Seventy percent say they got the drugs from friends or family, according to the district attorney’s office.
