Woburn Man Charged With OUI After Hitting Tree

A Woburn man is facing drunken driving charges after he smashed his car into a tree in Gloucester early Saturday morning, according to Gloucester police.
John F. Doherty Jr., 24, crashed his car into a tree on Atlantic Street around 12:30 a.m. Police say they found Doherty suffering from head wounds and covered in lacerations.
According to police, Doherty smelled of booze and slurred his speech while talking with responding officers. He was treated at the scene and transported to Beverly Hospital.

Police spoke with Doherty’s girlfriend who was traveling in a car ahead of the accident. She told police that she had been with him all evening and that the two had consumed a “few” drinks after leaving a work shift.
After investigating the incident, police determined Doherty had been speeding down Atlantic Street before he lost control of his car and crossed the center line.

Doherty will face charges of OUI, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, speeding, driving without a seat belt and marked lanes violation.
