  • Just when you thought it was safe to maybe go back in the water at least up to your knees comes two stories of sharks lurking just off the beaches of Cape Cod.
  • With more than 100,000 tourists expected in Salem between now and Halloween, the Board of Health enacted an indoor mask mandate for business through Nov. 13.
  • A Framingham School Committee member is having a doggone time of things with his tenant.
  • A poultry shop sign that for decades had drivers making a double-take in East Cambridge is going up for auction.

Wednesday's Top State Story

Matt Pieciak's Sunday was supposed to be a typical family beach day, with corn hole, food, beers and fishing. But it turned out becoming a day the Orleans family will remember for the rest of their lives, when Pieciak hooked a great white shark off the coast of Nauset Beach.

Pieciak cast out looking to catch maybe a bass or a bluefish, then went back to playing corn hole with his family and friends, when all of a sudden, he started to see his rod bend like never before.

So he turned to his cousin Cal and said, "Dude, hold my beer," and sprinted towards his rod.

Salem brings back masks through Halloween: Anyone working in or visiting a Salem business will need to wear a face covering indoors regardless of coronavirus vaccination status through the end of the Halloween season. The Board of Health approved the city's proposal at a special meeting Tuesday night that it said is in an effort to help curb the spread of the delta variant with the anticipation of a massive influx of tourists over the next three months. The mandate is set to expire two weeks after Halloween weekend on Nov. 13.

Ice Cream 'Metropolis' Plans New Sudbury Location: Sudbury residents may soon get to taste some of the best ice cream in Massachusetts — without having to drive to either Hudson or Cambridge. New City Microcreamery, founded in Hudson in 2015, is planning to open its third shop in Sudbury at the Whole Foods plaza, according to plans submitted to the Select Board.

Uma Flowers Dispensary Submits Special Permit To Open In Waltham: Although the city voted to legalize recreational marijuana in 2016, it passed two moratoriums on issuing licenses, the second of which expired in June 2020, and has still not approved an opening.

You Could Own Cambridge's Famous 'Live Poultry Fresh Killed' Sign: After almost 90 years in operation, the Mayflower Poultry Company is leaving its East Cambridge location and saying goodbye to its iconic 'Live Poultry Fresh Killed' sign. The 6-foot tall yellow chicken sign will is set to hit the auction block when the shop closes its doors by the end of the month.
