Woburn City Council Appoints Michael Lannan As Ward 7 Alderman
The council was deadlocked for 50 ballots before a candidate withdrew from the race.
WOBURN, MA — Woburn City Council picked Michael Lannan to serve as the Ward 7 alderman until the next election.
Lannan replaces Lindsay Higgins, the former council president who stepped down March 2. He will hold the office until the Nov. 2 municipal election.
The council went to 50 ballots deadlocked between Lannan and Christopher Irving, splitting 4-4 on most votes. Five votes, a majority, was needed to make an appointment. After the 50th ballot, the council had a five-minute recess, then Irving withdrew his name.

The council then appointed Lannan unanimously.
Irving said he still intends to run for the seat in the municipal election. Charles Viola also received some votes on some ballots.

The council solicited applications from candidates and received five.
