Woburn To Observe Juneteenth Holiday

City buildings and schools will be closed Monday for Juneteenth, a holiday celebrating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans.

WOBURN, MA — The City of Woburn is officially observing Juneteenth this year for the first time, Mayor Scott Galvin announced.

Woburn City Hall, Woburn Public Library, Woburn Senior Center and Woburn Public Schools and
other related administrative offices will be closed Monday, June 20, for the holiday. Trash pickup will run on its regular schedule, and emergency services will be available as always to the Woburn community.

Juneteenth, which falls on a Sunday this year, is a federal holiday commemorating the emancipation of Black Americans from slavery after the Civil War. June 19 marks the day federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to ensure all enslaved people in the state be freed — a full two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.
