After a Life on the Road, Scouras at Home at Nicky's in Wrentham

Owner Michael Scouras shares his story of life in music and running a restaurant.

Michael Scouras has been at Nicky’s in Wrentham for more than a decade, but his travels had brought him a lot farther than that.

“I used to work on the road, touring with bands,” he said. “I did that for 20 years.”

He said he’s worked with legends such as Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Brian Adams and Pat Benatar, just to name a few. He went to more than 54 countries in that line of work.

“It’s funny, because when I first started working in high school, I was at Ken’s Steakhouse in Framingham,” he said. “That’s how I started in this business and I ended up back in it after 20 years.”

Though the life of a roadie may seem like a good life, Scouras said after a while it lost its appeal for him.

“People are like you used to work in the music industry, why would you want to come back to the restaurant business?” he said. “I needed a change. The road thing was great for a long time. Living in a hotel or a tour bus every night, after a while, it kind of grows old on you.”

Scouras added he wanted to do something as far away from the music business as possible, and his father had started working at Nicky’s and asked him to join.

“I had the opportunity to work at the Comcast Center when I came back to the area, but I just didn’t want to do it anymore,” he said. “I started to work in Rhode Island at Sticky Fingers as a kitchen manager when my dad said you want to come up here and work with us. The opportunity came and I took it.”

Scouras said he has many fond memories of the music industry, but his favorite person to work with was definitely Brian Adams.

“He was just a really good guy, really down to earth,” he said.

Scouras said the key to Nicky’s is consistency, though he knows pleasing everyone isn’t a realistic approach.

“In any business, there’s people that will come in with a chip right off their shoulder right away,” he said. “You can’t please everybody so you try to please as many people as you can.”

Scouras added Nicky’s has now gone through three owners up to him, and it has stayed very successful.

“I had pretty much no changes,” he said. “I kept it the same way, this restaurant has always been a very successful restaurant for three owners. I’ve done some minor changes but nothing too major.”

He said one of the main reasons people come back is the fact that he’s managed to keep his prices very low.

“We do a lot of seniors here,” he said. “Try to keep the pricing down as far as I can. I hear all the time I can’t believe you guys don’t get more money. It’s like people are telling me to put my prices up.”

Scouras said he tries to help out the local community whenever he can, and has sponsored girls softball teams and other local charities.

“One of the girls from King Philip raised money for Katrina and I matched her,” he said. “She raised almost $2,000 for Katrina for one of her projects.”

Nicky’s is located on 460 Franklin St. and is open Tuesday - Friday, 6:30 a.m. - 9 p.m.; Saturday, 7 a.m. - 9 p.m.; Sunday, 7 a.m. - 8 p.m.; Monday, closed
