Hair Body and Soul in Wrentham a Success of Word of Mouth

Carol Mucciarone shares her story about the Hair Body and Soul Salon.

Carol Mucciarone started the 13 years ago, and she said her passion for hair began a lot longer than that.

“I just always had a knack for it,” she said. “You know, just growing up having long hair and sisters. We were always doing each other’s hair and nails.”

As an adult, she knew she wanted to work for herself. She said she had worked before as a bartender and an administrative assistant.

“I was tired of helping everybody else make money,” she said. “I wanted to be rewarded for the effort I put into it. The hard work I put in now is what I get back.”

Mucciarone said she grew up in Wrentham. She saw an opportunity to go to the Tri County Regional School in Franklin and go her haircutting license.

“James’ Restaurant’s parents owned this and five other locations, and I bought this one from them,” she said.

She added being a local helped to grow her business early on.

“I already had customers in this area, being from King Philip,” she said. “I grew up in Wrentham and I knew a lot of people.”

Mucciarone said though that was a plus, starting out with a customer base, it became harder and harder to grow. It was completely worth the hard work though.

“You have to pound the pavement and sell yourself,” she said. “A lot of it is word of mouth. You treat people well, I think they remember and appreciate that. I feel like I’m very outgoing and friendly, and I gained a lot of clients that way.”

She said before you can get the word of mouth, you have to have customers who really appreciate the work you do, especially in a tough economy.

“You have to be consistent and give good quality,” she said. “In this economy, that has helped me keep as many people as I have. Magic Shears was in business forever, that’s where I went to as a child and now they’re closing their doors.”

But Mucciarone said the hard work pays off and there is a certain satisfaction in helping people to look their best.

“It’s instant gratification,” she said. “Everybody’s always happy to see you and they’re happy when they leave. It’s really a great feeling.”

Mucciarone said she, her workforce and her clients are like family now. One of her employees has been working in the shop for half a decade.

“Peggy is 83, and she’s had about the same people for 50 years,” she said. “When they come in for their weekly wash and set it’s like they’re coming to have coffee or tea. It’s a visit, not just a service.”

Mucciarone said she’s seen some pretty unique hairstyles and colorings in her time, but the one that stuck out most to her was an adult woman who wanted a rainbow color scheme for her hair.

“I’m more traditional,” she said. “If kids want to do that, you know they’re kids. For an adult woman to want to have a bizarre color, it’s whatever. If you ask for my advice, I’ll give it to you but I do exactly what you want regardless.”

Mucciarone said she donates to the Wrentham Food Pantry, the State School Lions Club, Wrentham Youth Baseball and Soccer and the Wrentham Teachers Association, to name a few.

“It’s constant,” she said. “I want to support them because they support me. I want to give back to my Wrentham.”
