Woman Drowns While Trying To Save Dog From Icy MI Pond: Sheriff

Officials believe the woman ran onto the ice to try and save the dog before she fell into the open water.

LAPEER COUNTY, MI — A 30-year-old woman drowned in a Lapeer County pond Wednesday while trying to save the family dog from the freezing water, according to the Lapeer County Sheriff's Office.

The incident happened at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday along Armstrong Road in Goodland Township, according to the sheriff's office.

When officers arrived, they noticed the pond was covered in ice with open water in the center, according to the sheriff's office.

They also saw a dog floating in the water and believed it was dead, according to the sheriff's office.

Officers then used a paddle boat to break through the 1-inch thick ice to get into the open water where they found the dog and the woman's body, according to the sheriff's office.

The 30-year-old woman was taken to McLaren/Lapeer Hospital where she died, according to the sheriff's office.
