UPDATED: Berkley Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Announces Departure

Julie Melrose will leave the organization to take a full-time position; candidates sought to replace her and fill three Board of Directors openings.

Executive Director Julie Melrose announced in an e-mail Monday morning that she plans to leave the Berkley Area Chamber of Commerce and the organization is seeking a replacement, as well as new members for its Board of Directors.

"It has been my pleasure to serve as the Executive Director for the Berkley Area Chamber of Commerce for the past 5 years," Melrose wrote in an e-mail to members. "I am writing to inform you that I have accepted a full-time position and will be leaving the Berkley Chamber."

Melrose could not immediately be reached for comment. But Chamber of Commerce President Dan Cleary said Melrose is taking a job with Ameritax Plus in Berkley.

"This position has been a wonderful experience for me," Melrose wrote. "I have enjoyed working hand in hand with you to promote your businesses within the Berkley community."

Melrose has been a fixture at events including , the , the and more.

The Chamber of Commerce has begun to search for a new executive director as well as members to serve on the Board of Directors, Melrose wrote. All members and prospective members are urged to attend a meeting at 7 p.m. Dec. 5. on the second floor of the Building. Those who plan to attend can RSVP by emailing membership@berkleychamber.com or calling 248-414-9157.

Cleary, who also plans to step down from the Board of Directors after 6 years of service, said the executive director position is a varied role that serves as "the face and the voice of the Chamber."

The position, which is compensated based on a fixed salary plus a bonus structure, involves coordinating membership, events and public relations inside and outside Berkley, Cleary said.

He said candidates for the three volunteer Board of Directors seats that will be opening up must live in Berkley, Huntington Woods or Oak Park. Board members attend monthly Chamber of Commerce meetings, take turns attending various forums including the South Oakland Business Expo, regional meetings, and events including the , and .

"We all plan to stay active in the Chamber," Cleary said. "... We're having a call to arms to generate more interest and participation among businesses."

Melrose also sought to assure the business community of a seamless transition.

"I will maintain my role, as will the volunteer Board Members, so we can continue to provide service to our members," Melrose wrote.
