Berkley Patch Reader Wins a Kindle

Karen Hagglund, a member of the Huntington Woods Public Library book discussion group, says she plans to give the device to her cousin as a graduation present.

Berkley Patch was happy to deliver a new Kindle on Thursday to winner Karen Hagglund of Huntington Woods, who recommended "Caleb's Crossing" by Geraldine Brooks.

Hagglund, who discovered the book in the book discussion group, said she plans to give the Kindle to her cousin as a gift when she graduates in December from Olivet College in Olivet, Mich.

"She'll really enjoy it," Hagglund said.

"I love mine," said Hagglund, who already has a Kindle of her own. "It's just a great way to read. It's great to be able to carry your books in your pocket and read whatever you want."

Hagglund said some members of her book discussion group were reluctant to adopt the digital reading devices, but now as much as one-third of the group uses them. The group has been around since 1985, even longer than Oprah's Book Club, Hagglund said.

"('Caleb's Crossing') is a really terrific book," she said. "It's about a clash of cultures. It takes place in the 1600s. It's about a woman of English heritage interacting with a boy who's an Indian. It's still relevant in today's society when you talk about how cultures interface.

"There's a lot of prejudice in the book they overcome," Hagglund said. "It's an interesting read."

The Huntington Woods Public Library book discussion group tackles fiction and nonfiction titles. It meets at 7:30 p.m. the fourth Monday of each month. Call 248-543-9720 for more information.
