Need to Know: Voting in Berkley, Huntington Woods Nov. 8 Elections

Heading to the polls Tuesday? Here's your guide to hours, precincts, weather, candidate profiles and more.

Berkley and Huntington Woods are headed to the polls Tuesday to vote for elected representatives in municipal government, as well as on the Board of Education.

So what do you need to know before going to the polls Tuesday? We'll break it down for you:

The basics

  • The polls are open 7 a.m.-8 p.m.
  • Make sure you know where to vote by visiting the Michigan Secretary of State website, checking your voter ID card or calling Berkley City Clerk Cheryl Printz at 248-658-3310 or Huntington Woods City Clerk Joy Solanskey at 248-541-4300.
  • State law requires those campaigning stay 100 feet away from polling places. This includes wearing or displaying election-related materials such as clothing, buttons, pamphlets, fliers and stickers.
  • Bring an umbrella. There's a 30 percent chance of showers Tuesday, with mostly cloudy skies and a high of 64 degrees, according to the National Weather Service
  • Michigan law mandates that anyone voting in person must show picture identification; however, your voter registration card is not required in order for you to vote. According to a notice on the city of Berkley's website, acceptable forms of identification include: a Michigan driver's license, Michigan personal identification card, driver's license or personal identification card from another state, federal or state government-issue photo identification, U.S. passport, military identification card with photo, student identification with photo from a high school or other accredited institution of higher education and tribal identification card with photo.
  • Federal and state laws require every city to provide accessible registration and voting locations for voters with disabilities. If you require voting assistance, ask the election workers for help and two inspectors will assist you. "An elector who is blind, disabled, or unable to read or write may be assisted with his or her ballot by any person of the voter's choice, except the following: the voter's employer or agent of that employer, or an officer or agent of a union to which the voter belongs," according to the Secretery of State website. "For more information, contact your city or township clerk. Hearing-impaired residents may contact the Bureau of Elections at (517) 241-4320 (TTY)."
  • Absentee voting: All must be returned by 8 p.m. Nov. 8.
