A native of Huntington Woods is part of a six-woman relay team that recently set a record for swimming the English Channel, the Detroit Free Press reports.
Jenny Sutton Jalet, who now lives in Ann Arbor, along with her teammates Amanda Mercer, Bethany Williston, Emily Kreger, Susan Butcher and Melissa Karjala swam the channel Friday in 18 hours and 55 minutes, beating the previous record by 4 minutes, according to the report.
The women sought to raise $120,000 for research and treatment of the neuromuscular disease ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, after Mercer's neighbor was diagnosed in his early 40s, the Free Press reports.

"I think what they've done, all their self-guided training and their commitment, is amazing," Sutton Jalet's husband Sam Jalet told the Free Press. "But I thought (the world record) would go by the wayside. I'm thoroughly impressed."
