A sweltering heat marched along with participants in the 41st annual Fourth of July parade Wednesday in Huntington Woods, with a high near 100 degrees in the forecast.

Attendance along the Scotia leg of the parade, which began at the corner of Salem and York, was noticeably lower compared to last year and City Manager Alex Allie speculated that many people were waiting in their air-conditioned homes and darting out to catch the parade at the last minute.

The National Weather Service predicted a steady temperature Wednesday around 96, with heat index values as high as 107.

Fourth of July also fell midweek this year, meaning workers who had the federal holiday off had the opportunity to take a long weekend and head out of town.

Beth Schryburt of Huntington Woods, along with her daughter-in-law Lisa Schryburt of Royal Oak and grandkids Daniel King and Lauren Schryburt, chose to endure the heat along the parade route Wednesday.

"It's like a sauna," Beth Schryburt said. "You just sit and you drip."

Schryburt said she and her family attend the parade every year and a little heat wouldn't deter them.

"They say that in Huntington Woods, half of the residents are in the parade and the other half watch," Schryburt said with a laugh.
