UPDATED: Snow, Snow, Stay Away!

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for the white stuff Tuesday afternoon and warns of a messy Wednesday morning commute.

Updated at 7:21 p.m.: The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for snow Tuesday afternoon in effect from 7 p.m. until 7 a.m. Wednesday. A winter storm watch that had been issued earlier Tuesday was no longer in effect Tuesday night.

"Rain will change over to snow this evening and persist into the overnight. The snow should taper off by daybreak Wednesday. Total snowfall accumulations will range from 1 to 4 inches," according to the NWS advisory. "Snow-covered and icy roads are expected to develop tonight as temperatures drop below freezing. Untreated roads will be slippery for the Wednesday morning commute."

9:32 a.m.: There's nothing like a winter storm watch, flood watch and hazardous weather outlook to start the day, but that's what the National Weather Service says we have Tuesday in southeast Michigan – and it could make for a messy, slippery Wednesday morning commute.

The forecasting agency says heavy rain is expected to continue falling Tuesday, turning to a wintry mix between 9 p.m. and 4 a.m. and then to snow, just in time for the Wednesday morning rush hour. Accumulation of 3 to 5 inches is possible across much of the area, according to the NWS, as are wind gusts up to 28 miles per hour on Tuesday and Wednesday.

"Snow-covered and icy roads are expected to develop tonight as temperatures drop below freezing," reads the winter storm watch. "Roads are expected to be slippery for the Wednesday morning commute."

So, drivers, make sure you give yourself ample time to make the journey, arm yourself with an ice scraper (better safe than sorry) and take it easy out there.

A flood watch remains in effect through Tuesday evening and the forecasting agency warns the area could up to 2 inches of rain by Wednesday morning.

Wednesday will bring a mix of sun and clouds, with a high near 41 and a low around 24; snow showers are in the forecast every day through next Monday, the NWS reports.
