Week in Review: 'Vicious' Assault, Millage Proposal Meeting, Dads' Club Scholarship, Supreme Court Request and More

• : Our state's Olympians got involved in the social media frenzy of the kickoff to the London games.
• : Go Comedy! Improv Theater of Ferndale will teach the basics of improvisation during a free workshop Tuesday at the Huntington Woods Public Library.
• : Michael Guirey, 16, wins the $1,000 scholarship, which is given each year to a league player known for his sportsmanship and respect for his teammates, game officials and other teams.
• : The man was hospitalized earlier, but is now at home recovering.
• : Erandy Pacheco of Ferndale claims she was singled out by bank employees because of her race and wrongfully arrested by Berkley Public Safety officers. She has filed a lawsuit against the bank, the city of Berkley and the Berkley Public Safety Department.
• : Police used Taser to subdue Brent M. Smetana after assault; victim had been beaten, stabbed and bitten.
• : The state's top court will decide whether to take up the city's long legal fight against engineering firm Orchard, Hiltz & McCliment, Inc. over work done on Coolidge Highway.
• : The utility is working to make permanent fixes and discover what caused a July 17 blaze that left 10,000 customers in Royal Oak and Berkley without power.
• : The public is invited to attend the free talk "Woodward’s Dream: The story behind Detroit’s unique street layout" at 7 p.m. Aug. 14.
• : Katharine McGilsky of Berkley and Jodie Stein of Huntington Woods each have works entered in the contest.
• : Participants in a town hall meeting Tuesday night to discuss the Municipal Operating, Police and Fire Millage Proposal agree its fate will shape the city's future.
• : In our first Red Mitten survey, more than half of the respondents say they disagree with Republican Gov. Rick Snyder’s decision to veto a GOP-backed bill that requires photo ID for first-time voter registration or to obtain an absentee ballot.
• : The Oakland County agency says wild weather that hit Huntington Woods and Berkley around the Fourth of July caused expensive outages that will impact spending on other road maintenance activities.
• : The City Council passes a resolution to recognize Sandi Rewalt's 20 years of service.
