Woman reports someone filed taxes in her name

A 48-year-old Tyrone Township woman reported on Feb. 8 that someone had stolen her identity for tax purposes, according to a police report.

The woman told police that she received a letter from the IRS saying he had various discrepancies in her taxes for 2012, but that she had not filed any taxes, the report said.

According to the report, the woman contacted the IRS and informed them that someone must have used her social security number to file taxes.

The woman told police that the IRS was conducting their investigation and that she had already contacted all of the credit bureaus to report her identity stolen, the report said.

Unauthorized cell phones and phone lines purchased

A 32-year-old Marian Township woman reported receiving a letter in the mail from Verizon Wireless notifying her of a recent purchase she did not make on Feb. 7, according to a police report.

The letter congratulated the woman for purchasing five cell phones and lines. The woman told police that the letter was forwarded from her former Howell address, which she has not lived at since March 2012, the report said.

The woman told police she contacted the phone company and told them she did not make any purchases. Verizon Wireless advised the woman that the person who opened the account used her social security number, which was correct, the report said.

The woman said she also contacted the credit reporting agency to make them aware of the situation.
