2012 Champion for Children Nominations Sought

The Great Start Collaborative and CAP (Child Abuse Prevention) Council of Livingston County - now a program of LACASA - are once again joining forces to find a Champion for Children in Livingston County.

Dedicated to ensuring that Livingston County children grow up safe, healthy and ready to succeed in life, both organizations recognize the tremendous impact that dedicated individuals make in the lives of children every day.

Past award recipients include: Jean Garratt, who touched thousands of young lives during her 25 years as the Director of Early Childhood Programs for the Livingston Educational Services Agency; Sue Swartz, community advocate and child abuse prevention educator; Vickie Smith, Program Director for the Connection Youth Services, and; Jo Del Vero, teacher, counselor and student assistance coordinator with Hartland Consolidated Schools for more than 40 years.

Previous recipients also have included family support workers, foster parents, child care providers and community volunteers.

This year, CAP and the Great Start Collaborative are looking for one outstanding individual who devotes significant time and energy to helping children in Livingston County.

Nominees may be a person whose love of children is evident in the work they do, or in the way they spend their extra time. It could be someone who tutors children and helps them succeed in school or someone who helps troubled or sick children. There are many champions among us who strive to help the children in our community and who deserve recognition for their efforts.

If you know a Champion for Children, please contact Deanna Norris, CAP Council Director, for a nomination form by sending an e-mail to dnorris@lacasacenter.org or by calling (517) 548-1350, ext. 287. Nominations will be accepted through Monday, April 23, 2012.

The 2012 Champion for Children Award will be presented during “The Power of One” Celebration on Friday, May 18, at Cleary University’s Johnson Center in Howell. The event is a continuation of the awareness campaign running throughout April, which is National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

The Champion for Children Award and “The Power of One” theme celebrate the fact that each one of us has the power to change the life of a child.

The Great Start Collaborative of Livingston County is a partnership of early childhood experts, parents and community organizations who work together to ensure that Livingston County children are prepared to succeed in school and in life.

The CAP Council, serving Livingston County for more than 32 years, is a program of LACASA and a designated local council of the Michigan Children’s Trust Fund. CAP programs are funded, in part, by the Livingston County United Way.
