Brighton Fire Chief Starts New Column
Brighton Fire Chief Mike O'Brian is teaming up with Brighton Patch for this 'Ask the Fire Chief' column.

The fire authority receives multiple phone calls a day asking for information on on all sorts of topics. From open burning, emergency response, how the authority is supported and even our insurance rating. The Brighton Area Fire Authority is one of the premier organizations in the State and we are working with the Brighton Patch to start a new piece called “Ask the Fire Chief.” It's our hope to provide some timely information as well as allow you to ask the Authority Questions.
The Brighton Area Fire Authority (BAFA) is the leading fire department in southeast Michigan. The Authority was started in 2001 when the City of Brighton Fire Department and the Brighton Township Fire Department merged to create the Fire Authority. It's responsible for fire protection, fire prevention, and rescue services for the City of Brighton, Brighton Township, and Genoa Township.
The Authority provides services from our five strategically placed fire stations located in the 74 square mile district. We house an emergency fleet of six engines, two water tankers, two medium rescues, one heavy rescue, one 95' platform truck, two brush vehicles, and miscellaneous staff vehicles.
Earlier this year, the Authority approved the purchase of two tanker vehicles and one ladder which will replace our aging platform. Through our funding structure the Authority was able to purchase the vehicles without financing them. The new vehicles are scheduled for delivery in early summer which will greatly aid in our ability to provide service to our residents.
Our staff is the backbone of our organization and the BAFA is considered a combination fire department. We utilize professional paid on call firefighters and full-time staff to meet our service delivery. During the week, we have six staff on duty which respond to emergencies and perform other work such as prevention, inspection, and training. Two fire inspectors work to inspect and educate our community each day as well as respond to larger incidents. Outside of those hours, our firefighters and officers respond from home or work to the fire station, then respond to the calls.
For those looking to support their community, and make some additional income, the Authority is taking applications for paid on call firefighters. You can always visit our web-page at www.brightonareafire.com or like us on Facebook.
