Howell Man Hospitalized for Same Virus That Killed His Wife

A Howell man whose wife died last month in the national Fungal Meningitis outbreak has now been hospitalized and is being treated for the same illness.

According to WHMI, 65-year-old George Cary began having severe headaches on Friday, just days after being told that tests in early October and a spinal tap showed now evidence of the illness.

Cary's late wife died Sept. 30. Both of them were treated with steroid injections at Michigan Pain Specialists in Brighton, which was one of four Michigan locations to receive the contaminated steroids made by a Massachusetts pharmacy.

There have been over 300 cases of Fungal Meningitis that have led to 24 deaths in 17 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Michigan has had 73 cases and five deaths.
