What Does it Take to Work With the Brighton Area Fire Authority?

The Brighton Area Fire Authority (BAFA) is a combination fire department. The term combination relates to the makeup of the staffing on the department. We utilize a mix of full-time and paid on call staff to handle emergencies within in our response district.

Since the Authority covers Genoa Township, Brighton Township and the City of Brighton, we are always recruiting men and women to serve their community and respond to one of our five fire stations.

  • Minimum of 18 years of age
  • Eligible to work in United States
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Resides in the Brighton Area Fire Authority's jurisdiction

Those who are interested in working as a paid on call firefighter will submit an application, available at our stations or at www.brightonareafire.com, which will be reviewed by our Human Resources department and then forwarded on for an initial back ground verification.

Once the application is approved, a series of interviews are scheduled where a final recommendation will be made by staff for hiring. Applicants without training will be sent through of the minimum training needed to be a firefighter in the State of Michigan. This includes medical first responder and Firefighter II at our fire academy.

The typical commitment during the first year is two nights a week and every third Saturday. It is critical that each candidate receive all necessary training to ensure their safety as well as performing at a high pace for our citizens.

Our staff has varying backgrounds from engineers, sales, recent high school graduates, and electricians. These professionals have joined BAFA to find extra income, or a means to serve their community. Paid on call firefighters receive an hourly rate during training, incident response, or other activities with the fire authority.
