Bodycam Footage Shows Firefighter Taking Pills From Fatal Scene

A Harrison Township firefighter faces a felony charge after reportedly taking a bottle of pills from a fatal motorcycle crash in August.

MACOMB COUNTY, MI β€” A Harrison Township firefighter is facing a 4-year felony after police say he took pills from an accident scene.

Authorities say 45-year-old Steven Hart took an orange vial with unknown pills from a fatal motorcycle crash scene in late August. Responding officers reported finding the pills, but then could not locate them. After reviewing the police officers’ bodycams, it was found that the firefighter maintained possession of the bottle after picking it up and looking at it.

Police say it is unknown what Hart did with the pills and they were never located during the investigation.

Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham says the bodycams hold authorities responsible for their actions.

β€œIn an effort to be more transparent to our community, our deputies wear body worn cameras as part of their everyday uniform,” Wickersham said in a release. β€œNot only does this hold our deputies accountable for their actions but it also holds everyone around them, including the public and other first responders, accountable as well.”

The incident was presented to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office and a warrant was issued for Hart for one count of Tampering with Evidence. He turned himself into the 41-B District Court of Clinton Township and was given a $10,000 personal bond during his arraignment.

β€œThe public trust in our incredible first responders must remain strong in order for Macomb to remain a safe community,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith. β€œWhere we see wrong doing by one or our men or women in uniform, we must be vigilant in holding them accountable to the law.”

The Harrison Township Fire Department has been cooperative in this investigation, police said. Hart is currently on administrative leave.
