Businesses And Donors Rally Around Macomb County Habitat For Humanity After Three Homes Were Robbed

The community is springing into action to support Macomb County Habitat for Humanity after the break-ins.

MACOMB COUNTY, MI β€” Macomb county businesses and donors are rallying around Macomb County Habitat for Humanity after three of their new homes were broken into, vandalized and robbed of their furnaces and hot water heaters, leaving the organization reeling and racking up thousands of dollars in damage, according to a news release. One of the homes was scheduled to go to a veteran.

Randazzo Heating & Cooling is replacing all of the furnaces and hot water heaters, Mechanical Engineering has reached out to help, and Consumers Energy and the Office of Prosecutor Eric J. Smith are contributing huge amounts to make a significant dent in the damages. Smith said in a statement, β€œAs Americans, we owe a great debt to our veterans. My office is proud to stand with these men and women who stand guard over us. It is our privilege to work with Macomb County Habitat for Humanity to support them in this hour of need.”

The total dollar damages figure is still being assessed. However, there's a huge looming financial check-list, including paying for repairs to the doors and windows that were kicked in and the cost of installing alarm systems in the properties to prevent future thefts. Helen Hicks, President and CEO of Macomb County Habitat for Humanity, said in a statement, β€œWhat we do know is other than the furnaces and hot water heaters, there were plumbing materials and pipes taken, damage to the windows and door ways that need replacing, and an air conditioning unit was also stolen...We are very grateful for our donor community and everyone who has reached out to lend a hand.”
