600 Dearborn Steelworkers To Be Laid Off: Reports

The company said the layoffs are due to "weak" U.S. automotive production.

DEARBORN, MI — An Ohio steel company is planning to lay off hundreds of workers at its Dearborn plant this summer due to what they say is "weak" U.S. automotive production, according to reports.

Cleveland-Cliffs, based in Cleveland, will lay off 600 steelworkers at its Dearborn Works plant by July 15, according to reports.

The steel company said it’s temporarily pausing operations at the blast furnace, BOF steel shop and continuous casting facilities at the Dearborn plant, according to reports.

The company will keep roughly 550 employees to operate the Dearborn finishing facilities, including the pickling line tandem cold mill and continuous galvanizing line, according to reports.

"These actions will allow the company to operate more efficiently and in a more cost competitive way for the current market environment," the company told the Detroit News. "We believe that, once President Trump’s policies take full effect and automotive production is re-shored, we should be able to resume steel production at Dearborn Works."
