Beaumont Breast Care Centers in Dearborn, Trenton and Wayne, in partnership with the Beaumont Health Foundation, have developed a year-round program to provide free screening mammograms to uninsured, or underinsured, women living in or near those three communities. “Breast Health for Life” is a joint effort among the Beaumont Breast Care Centers in Wayne and Dearborn, as well as the Karen Colina Wilson Smithbauer Breast Care Center in Trenton.

“We are delighted to offer this service to the community,” said Julie Lafata, supervisor, Beaumont Breast Care Center, Dearborn. “Generous donors to the Beaumont Health Foundation – and supporters of the annual Women’s Health Care Golf Classic – have made it possible for us to go the extra mile by also providing funding for additional imaging when screening mammograms show abnormal findings.”

Lafata added patient privacy and confidentiality are built into the program and continued, “Nothing is more important than the health of our community members. This program is why philanthropy is so important to us at Beaumont.”

Ideally, any participant with a primary care physician would obtain a mammogram order from her primary care physician. If a woman does not have a primary care physician, she should still contact one of the three breast care centers. She will then be referred to a Beaumont physician who will write the screening order and provide any necessary follow-up care. “The best way of finding breast cancer that can lead to a cure is having a screening mammogram every year,” Lafata said. “All women age 40 and older should do this annually.”
