Beer Tasting, Dearborn Candidate Night: 5 Things to Know This Week

Here are five pieces of information to help fuel your week in Dearborn.

It's Monday, and that means we've put together this list of things going on in the Dearborn area to help make your week a little brighter, easier and more fun. For a full list of things to do this week, look at the Patch Calendar of Events.

1. Catch a movie

The Dearborn Public Library's "Blockbuster Film Series" kicks off this week of events in town. The movie featured Monday is Oz: The Great and Powerful. The free movie starts at 7 p.m. in the Henry Ford Centennial Library auditorium.

2. Secretary of State Visit to Dearborn

Secretary of State Ruth Johnson will visit the Dearborn office at 4 p.m. on Tuesday. Johnson will be available to speak about her efforts to better serve veterans and military personnel, and other topics. She strongly supported adding a veteran designation to Michigan driver’s licenses and a new fundraising license plate to support veterans’ programs. The Dearborn SOS is located at 5094 Schaefer Road.

3. Meet the Candidates Night

The Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the League of Women Voters will host local candidates in Dearborn and Dearborn Heights making a bid for office at an event at Joe Vicari's Italian Steakhouse on Tuesday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Network with business leaders, community advocates and those running for office before the Aug. 6 primary. The event is free and open to the public. The event will take place at 21400 Michigan Ave. in Dearborn.

4. Jazz on the Avenue

The young powerhouse guitarist out of New York, Matt Marshak, is taking the contemporary jazz scene by storm with his exciting funk infused sound. Opening for Matt Marshak is Detroit’s own Deon Yates. This double bill will provide for a memorable night of the best in contemporary jazz from two great music cities. The concert takes place Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m., free of charge and open to the public. Concerts take place at Dearborn City Hall Park, 13615 Michigan Ave.

5. Hot Glass + Cold Beer

The fourth annual “Hot Glass + Cold Beer” event takes place at the Glass Academy Aug. 1, from 5 to 10 p.m. with live glassblowing demonstrations, tasty cold beer from selected local breweries, Mexican food, and great community conversation. Tickets are $55 in advance. The ticket includes one hand-blown beer tumbler. For more information, visit http://www.glassacademy.com/.
