Dearborn Police Recover Church Chalice from Intoxicated Man

The following information was supplied by the Dearborn Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

On Sunday night at about 10:30 p.m., a Dearborn police officer on routine patrol spotted an intoxicated man at a gas station near Michigan Avenue and Mason Street.

The officer became suspicious when he observed the man approaching customers at the gas pumps. Further investigation indicated that the man, Devin Labuda, 21, of Dearborn, was in possession of a golden Communion chalice.

After questioning Labuda, the officer determined that Labuda had entered the unlocked First Baptist Church on Nowlin Street and took the chalice. The church's pastor was contacted and the chalice was returned. Labuda was arrested for unlawful entry into a building.

"A person who would steal from a church would steal from anyone. I'm pleased that our officer was able to spot this suspect, arrest him and return the chalice to the church," chief Ronald Haddad said.
