Metro Detroit Gas Prices Rise

We're paying a little more at the pump than we were last week, according to the latest AAA data.

DEARBORN, MI — Gas prices are climbing in Metro Detroit, according to new AAA data.

The Dearborn-based auto club reports that a regular gallon of unleaded self-service gasoline in the Detroit area is now approximately $2.26. That's a jump of four cents per gallon in the last week. Although current gas prices are lower than what we were paying a month ago - $2.44 a gallon.

Statewide, it costs even more to gas up. A regular gallon of unleaded self-service gasoline in Michigan will run you $2.31.

What's causing the spike? The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) decided in Nov. 2016 to cut production of oil by 1.2 million barrels a day for six months. Hence, economics principle 101: Lower supply equals higher prices. OPEC will meet on May 25 to determine whether or not to extend the production cut.
