Women's Health Care Classic

Supports Women's Programs at Local Corewell Health Hospitals

(Corewell Health)

On June 10, 2024, Karen Wilson Smithbauer and Drs. Harris, Birkhill, Wang, Songe & Assoc., PC will host the Women’s Health Care Classic. Since 1993, this annual event has raised more than $7 million to benefit women’s health care services at Corewell Health hospitals in Dearborn, Taylor, Trenton and Wayne. In 2023, this event raised more than $280,000 to support women’s services.

The Women’s Health Care Classic is a two-course event with a women’s-only tournament at Dearborn Country Club and a mixed tournament (men and women) at TPC Michigan. The event provides an opportunity for women and men from across Southeast Michigan to enjoy a day of golf on one of two premier, private courses. Highlights of the day include breakfast, pro shop shopping experience, lunch, and awards ceremony.

“As a longtime participant and sponsor of the Women’s Health Care Classic and a physician, I see the program support received by funds raised at this annual event and how it translates to help hundreds of women each year,” said Novi resident Donald Conn, M.D., president of title sponsor Drs. Harris, Birkhill, Wang, Songe & Associates, PC, Corewell Health physician and co-chair. “I strongly encourage others to join us for a fun afternoon that helps so many.”

Monies raised from this event help to finance more than 80 women’s services - from advanced medical equipment to scholarships for uninsured and underinsured women so they may receive breast care services. Specific support is given for transportation to and from appointments, wigs & head coverings, educational materials, facility renovations and updates, endowments for continuing care giver education and a nurse navigator program.

“I am a breast cancer survivor, so I feel strongly about helping other women navigate through their difficult journey with this disease,” said Grosse Ile resident Karen Wilson Smithbauer, title sponsor and co-chair. “The latest technologies and equipment are needed to support early detection of breast cancer, allowing for the best possible outcomes. In addition, funds raised support nurse navigators and others so they may provide individualized guidance to patience at every step.”
