Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament Draws Over 1,000 to Otsego With Support From USG

Annual event featured hoops, family activities, and local charity support

OTSEGO, MI — The Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament returned to downtown Otsego August 22–24, bringing over 1,000 players and spectators to the streets for a weekend of competition, entertainment, and community spirit. Among the sponsors helping make the tournament possible was USG, a leading manufacturer of innovative building materials with Michigan facilities in River Rouge (Detroit), Otsego, and Alabaster.

Teams from across Michigan and neighboring states competed in multiple brackets — including the Young Bracket for players age 8 and under, which featured 8-foot rims. With registered officials on every court, the games were fast-paced, highly competitive, and family friendly.

The weekend began with a Charity Macker Basketball Game featuring local teachers, city officials and community members to raise funds for Wishbone Pet Rescue Alliance. Saturday’s activities also featured the popular Slam Dunk Contest, where the winner took home a $500 prize. The event concluded Sunday with a Free Throw Competition and final round of games before closing ceremonies.

For USG, whose building materials are used in hospitals, offices, airports (including Gerald R. Ford International), universities, and homes in Michigan and across the country, sponsoring the Gus Macker tournament was a natural extension of its commitment to community well-being. The company integrates safety and quality into every aspect of its operations and extends that same commitment to the communities where its employees live and work.

“Many of our employees live and work right here in Otsego, so this tournament is personal to us,” said USG Otsego Plant Manager Eric Bock. “Supporting Gus Macker is one way we can show our pride in this community and contribute to the energy and excitement that events like this bring.”
