Michigan House committee discusses municipal utility ownership, passes bills on utility regulation (michiganadvance.com) — Lansing residents served by the Board of Water and Light are at the center of a new House hearing on municipal utilities, where BWL was highlighted as the state’s largest public power provider. Lawmakers also advanced two bills on tree trimming near power lines and protecting access to natural gas and propane, changes that could shape how local utilities operate in coming years.

Kingston Thomas ready to put tools to use for East Lansing boys basketball (lansingstatejournal.com) — East Lansing’s defending Division 1 state champion boys basketball team is off to a 2-0 start after a 73-58 win over Sexton at Lansing’s Don Johnson Fieldhouse, powered by 23 points from junior guard Kingston Thomas. With a new offer from Michigan State and a larger role this season, Thomas and teammate KJ Torbert are emerging as the Trojans’ key leaders in their title defense.

Michigan DNR approves $1.9 million grant for local parks (wilx.com) — State officials in Lansing have approved nearly $1.9 million in Recreation Passport grants to upgrade local parks across 15 Michigan communities, including several in Mid-Michigan. Projects include restroom work at Vevay Township Community Park and improvements at Clinton Trails County Park and a senior center park in St. Johns, funded through the $14 annual state park pass.

East Lansing Police Use of Force Has Surged and Racial Disparities Have Grown, Data Shows (eastlansinginfo.news) — East Lansing’s police are using force more often this MSU school year, with new data showing a sharp rise and widening racial disparities in who’s affected. City leaders, the oversight commission, and the Lansing NAACP branch are clashing over Police Chief Jen Brown’s leadership, proposed bias training, and a plan to add officers and surveillance downtown that could strain the city budget.
