Candidate Concedes in U.S. Senate Race

Both parties poured outside money into race for Michigan's open senate seat, one of a handful in the country GOP hoped would tilt balance.

Congressman Gary Peters is headed to the U.S. Senate after defeating former Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land Tuesday.

Land called Peters, a Bloomfield Township Democrat, shortly after 9 p.m. to concede the race, one of several contests across the country targeted by outside groups hoping to tilt the balance of the Senate to the Republican side.

In a statement, Michigan Republican Party Chairman Bobby Schostak said the loss was β€œa disappointing reality for everyone who wanted see this open seat turn red.”

β€œMichigan families are tired of Harry Reid’s liberal, do-nothing Senate, and Terri Lynn Land would have made a great Senator to fix the mess in Washington.

β€œWe appreciate all the time Terri gave on the campaign trail over the last year, talking with families about her plans to create more jobs, repeal Obamacare, support the Keystone Pipeline and strengthen our immigration system.
