Chesterfield Police Officer Attacked by Dog During Raid

A township detective suffered arm injuries after a dog bit him during a Tuesday night raid for a felony warrant, according to police.

A Chesterfield Township police detective suffered gashes to his arms when a pit bull lashed out at him during a late Tuesday night raid in the community. The dog was shot following the attack, police said Wednesday morning.

"Our officers went to do a search at a place yesterday and a dog at the place attacked an officer," said Chief Bruce Smith. "The dog went to attack another officer and they had to shoot it."

The detective was hospitalized immediately after the incident.

At approximately 10: 30 p.m., police went to Hometown USA mobile homes in the 22 Mile and Fairchild area to execute a felony search warrant on an undisclosed charge. Expecting dogs at the scene, the detective was equipped with a dog stick that was effective with a larger pit bull first seen there. But a second pit bull ran up to the officer and attacked him, Smith said.

"This other one came out of nowhere and the detective said it felt like he was hit by a two-by-four," he said, adding detectives shot the dog before it injured another officer.
