Chesterfield Soldier Killed in Iraq

Army Pfc. Robert M. Friese, originally from Clare County, MI, died in combat, the Pentagon announced Sunday.

A 21-year-old Chesterfield Township soldier was killed in combat in Iraq, according to the military.

U.S. Army Pfc. Robert M. Friese died Friday, April 29 in the Al Qadisiyah province. Friese was fatally injured when enemy forces attacked his unit with a rocket-propelled grenade. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment in Fort Hood, Texas, according to the Pentagon.

Friese grew up and attended school in Harrison in Clare County, Michigan, Sgt. 1st Class Margot Dove of the Michigan National Guard said.

The Fort Hood Press Center stated in a Monday news release that his "home of record" is listed as Chesterfield Township.

It also stated, Friese joined the military in May 2009 as an M1 armor crewman and was deployed to Operation New Dawn in September 2010.

"Friese's awards and decorations include the Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with campaign star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon and Overseas Service Ribbon," according to the Press Center.
