Clipped Minivan Strikes Utility Pole

DTE Energy planned to replace the broken pole Monday night, New Baltimore police said.

A minivan struck and broke a utility pole Monday evening in New Baltimore.

After responded to the accident, closely watched the leaning pole off Green Street near Alfred as DTE Energy was called to take it down.

Around 7 p.m., a woman turned from the Salvation Army plaza onto Green Street, but looked back as a potentially defective hatch opened the trunk of her Jeep, Police Sgt. Eric Styles said.

The driver swerved into a minivan in another lane, clipping the side of it. The impact caused the minivan to crash into the pole, Styles said.

"She hit me hard enough to hit that pole," Sterling Heights resident Eileen Kapalka said after the accident.
