New Baltimore Has Worst Commute Among Michigan Small Towns

Twenty-eight percent of residents travel more than 45 minutes from home to work, according to a recent study of small-town commutes.

New Baltimore motorists who get grumpy behind the wheel may feel validated by a recent ranking of daily commutes among small-town drivers.

The waterside city is listed as having the worst commute in Michigan with 28 percent of residents traveling more than 45 minutes from home to work, according to The Business Journals On Numbers. New Baltimore is cited as No. 2,773 on the database of 3,012 towns with populations between 10,000 and 50,000 across the country.

About 27 percent of New Baltimore residents have commutes that are 30-44 minutes. While nearly 22.4 percent commute 15-29 minutes and the same amount of drivers have commutes 14 minutes or less.

In Michigan, the small city with the best commute is Alpena, ranked No. 9 on the list. Nationally, Atlus, OK, was deemed the top small-town commute.

On Numbers reports it compiled the information by analyzing commuting data from the five-year version of the 2009 American Community Survey by the U.S. Census Bureau.
