Electronic Sign Aims to Curb Speeding in New Baltimore

The speed measuring awareness trailer will be positioned along streets with frequent speeders.

New Baltimore drivers will soon notice an electronic sign that posts their speed as they travel down main or side streets.

The newly purchased Speed Measuring Awareness Trailer, also known as a SMART sign, was bought from Huntington Woods police at auction for $600 and decorated for local police for about another $400. Similar trailers that are brand new are valued at approximately $10,000, according to New Baltimore Police Chief Tim Wiley.

"The whole purpose of it is to get voluntary speed enforcement cooperation," Wiley said. "More or less we're just trying to use it as an educational tool."
