Storms Roll In, Power Goes Out in Chesterfield

For the second time in a week, Chesterfield Township residents lost power Saturday night.

More than 1,000 DTE Energy customers who lost power for several hours Saturday night during a thunderstorm were well-versed in the electricity-losing drill.

That's because power went out two days before when a transformer prompted .

As the Saturday night storm rolled in, the lights went out around 9 p.m. in more than 1,300 households in Chesterfield Township. By Sunday morning, a handful of customers were still without power and could expect it to be restored Monday, according to Scott Simons, DTE spokesman.

The utility company's outage map citing more people were out of power Sunday had not been updated at press time, Simons said.

Unlike Thursday, this outage pertained to the storm and not a transformer issue, he said.

Chesterfield Township firefighters said the power outage and weather did not cause any major problems Saturday night. They did, however, respond to a few reports of downed wires throughout the township.

Township police reported there were no major incidents overnight. Information about a car accident in the 24 Mile and Gratiot area was not available early Sunday but police said there were no known fatalities in any crashes overnight.

New Baltimore police said they responded to some minor property damage incidents.

After the power went out Saturday, residents took to the Patch Facebook page to share their experiences.

This isn't the first holiday weekend that area residents lost electricity. Last Fourth of July, more than after a storm a couple days prior knocked out the lights in about 4,000 households.
