Train Death Deemed Suicide

Chesterfield Township man waited on tracks for train, police said.

The 36-year-old man who was struck by a train last month sat on the tracks in Chesterfield Township and waited for the train to come along to end his life, township police said Friday.

The man had been living in and out of a Mount Clemens shelter, but stayed in Chesterfield Township at times. His family told police he had been suffering from depression and other mental illnesses. He did not leave a note before his death at approximately 2 a.m. Feb. 16 in the 23 Mile and Gratiot area, Detective Sgt. Deron Myers said.

The conductor honked his horn three times before the train hit the man. There were no crossing bars because the incident did not take place at an intersection, Myers said.
