It's hardly bathing suit weather, but aspiring lifeguards should start practicing their breast strokes. New Baltimore Parks and Recreation will hire about eight lifeguards for the summer season at Burke beach in the near future. "It would be a great summer job for college kids," Recreation Director Brian Kay said Wednesday. There will be a total of about 10-12 lifeguards on various shifts, some of whom are returning from last summer, Kay said. But in order to be eligible, candidates must be certified. Anyone interested in applying who is not certified, may take the Lifeguard Certification Class that runs from noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays, April 6-June 1, except May 25, at the Anchor Bay Aquatic Center. Participants must be 15 years old and older. The fee is $150 if you pass the swim pre-test. Completion of the class means participants can apply for lifeguard positions in New Baltimore and beyond.
