Man Faces Larceny Charges for Swapping Merchandise Barcodes

The following arrest information was supplied by the Northville Township Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Northville Township police arrested a man at 1:36 p.m. on April 16 at Home Depot, 39500 Seven Mile Road, on larceny charges, according to a police report.

A Home Depot loss prevention officer said he recognized the man who walked into the store and knew he was suspected of stealing from various area Home Depot stores, the report said. The prevention officer followed the man and said he saw him put different SKU barcodes on two products, according to the report.

The items that the man selected were LED undercabinet lights valued at $99.97 each, the report said. The barcodes that he put on the LED lights were for snap-in gutter filters valued at $1.96, the report said.

The man went to the self check-out lane where he paid for the items, the report said. Loss prevention officers then confronted him and took him into custody, according to the report.

The Northville Township police officer arrested him and searched his car with his permission, where he found various barcodes cut out and placed in envelopes and containers, the report said.

He was taken to the Northville Township Police Department and posted a $100 bond, the report said. He pled not guilty 11:50 a.m. April 17 during a video arraignment before a judge in 35th District Court, according to the report. He has an 8:30 a.m. hearing May 8.
