2 Northville Rowers Qualify For Nationals

Yannis and Laki Papoulis placed first in a regatta last weekend, and now qualify for the national championship in June.

While the Northville Rowing Club has competed in two prior regattas so far this spring with excellent results, this past weekend saw the team travel to Ohio and come home with a true honor.

In what is traditionally a short and fast season, Northville Rowing Club (NRC) traveled to Harsha Lake in Cincinnati, to take part in the Midwest Scholastic Rowing Championship Regatta, one of the largest regattas in the country and one that serves as a qualifier for the US Rowing National Championships.

NRC competed against more than 500 rowers from six states over a distance of 1500 meters. Eleven boats were entered in various races and while all of the boats did an outstanding job, the Mens Varsity 8, Mens Junior 4, and Mens Varsity 1 scull all placed well in their time trials and moved onto the semi-finals. All had respectable finishes, but unfortunately missed moving on to the semi-finals by mere seconds.

The Mens Varsity 2 scull, rowed by brothers Yannis and Laki Papoulis, placed first in their heat with a time of 05:56.360 and moved onto the semi-finals. Despite challenging weather conditions on Sunday afternoon, the brothers had an extremely exciting race, finishing in Second Place. That win qualifies them for the US Rowing National Championship June 27–29 on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, NJ.

NRC travels to Grand Rapids this weekend to compete in the Michigan State Championship Regatta.
