Northville's Annual Seedling Giveaway is Saturday

Each person is allowed six free seedlings.

It's time for the annual Seedling Giveaway in Northville!

Anyone who lives, works or goes to school in Northville or Northville Township is welcome to visit Northville Township Hall, 44405 Six Mile Road, between 9 and 11 a.m. Saturday to pick up free seedlings.

Barbara O’Brien, founder of the Northville Township Beautification Commission and township resident for 47 years, said her trees that started off as seedlings from this event years ago are now 30 feet tall.

"I planted them on the north side of my house near a chimney," she said. "As they got bigger, I moved them out and now they're a wonderful screen for privacy."

Up to six seedlings will be handed out to each person on a first come, first served basis.

O'Brien said people can choose between these seedlings:

  • Blue Spruce
  • Norway Spruce
  • Sugar Maple
  • Flowering Dogwood
  • American Plum

"The seedling is not bigger than your finger," she said.

They must immediately go into soil and those handing out the seedlings will offer tips on how to properly care for them.

"I’m just an ordinary gardener but mine are doing very nicely," she said.

O’Brien said the township and city's Beautification Commissions work together for this event and get the seedlings from Michigan State University.
