3 Novi Students Win Auto Show Poster Awards

3 Novi students all win awards during the North American International Auto Show poster contest

NOVI, MI- Sophie Markus, a senior at Novi High School has beat out 825 entries from 68 different schools, to win the grand prize in the 30th annual North American International Auto Show poster contest.

Markus, was able to complete the prize winning entry during a long weekend when she was feeling ill, instead of spending the time laying bed, she took to designing her prize winning entry.

Markus won the grand prize which included the title of Designer's Best in Show, as well as $1,000 and her poster will be featured in the official NAIAS program, as well as being available to the auto show attendees, on Jan 20-28 at the Cobo Center in Downtown Detroit.

The creative competition was open to Michigan students in grades 10-12, it gave young artists a chance to be part of one of the premier auto shows of the world, according to a statement from the Novi Community School District.

The posters are reviewed and judged by the 2018 NAIAS chairmen, a general Motors automotive designer, a College for Creative Studies instructor, and State Farm Insurance representative.

Markus wasn't the only one to receive a prize at her school, two other students from Novi also received prize money for their entries in the contest, junior Marie Huber came in first place in the 11th grade award category which included a $500 prize, and senior Joanne Kwon was awarded the Most Creative Award with a prize of $250.

"We have had females win before, but usually it's more male, " Melissa Edmunds, the graphic design instructor said. "This time it was all female, so it was nice for the girls to shine."
