Novi Elementary Students Raise $700 for Hurricane Sandy Victims

Students at Novi Woods Elementary held a fundraiser Friday.

When the fourth grade students at Novi Woods Elementary School heard about the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy, they decided they want to do something to help.

After brainstorming together, they came up with the idea for a fundraiser in which students could wear a hat or sunglasses to school on Friday if they donated at least $1.

Following their slogan of "The Sun Will Shine Again," the students raised $700.11 for the American Red Cross.

"We got the idea that 'the sun will shine again' because of all the wind and rain," said fourth grade student Alex Awdish.

Alex and fellow fourth grade student Shruya Sampath made an announcement on the PA system Thursday to tell the rest of the school about the fundraiser.

Both of them said they saw the damage on TV, and Alex said he his family friends left the area just before the hurricane hit. The two spoke on behalf of the fourth grade to let the other students know about the hurricane damage and how they could help.

The students at Novi Woods have come together in the past to help others, like when they had a fundraiser to help the victims of the Dexter tornado last year.

"We talked about it and any time there is damage that happens in any country or state or city, we raise money to try to help them build it up again," Shruya said.
