Novi High School to Add Weighted Grades

Students who take certain advanced classes will increase their grade point averages.

Novi High School is implementing an added benefit for students taking Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) classes.

Starting in the 2013-2014 school year, all AP and IB classes will have weighted grades, according to an email from Novi High School. This means that students' grade point averages will get increased by one point for each AP or IB class they take.

"We are confident this decision will better support our students who apply to post-secondary institutions and for academic scholarships, in today’s highly competitive society," the email said.

The school currently used a traditional 4.0 grade point average (GPA) scale. In a weighted system, an A grade in an AP or IB class will be worth 5.0 instead of 4.0.

Grade Regular Weighted A 4.0 5.0 B 3.0 4.0 C 2.0 3.0 D 1.0 2.0 E 0.0 0.0

However, an unweighted GPA will still be listed on students' transcripts. Novi High School chose to start weighted grades because students were missing out on potential college scholarships and acceptances, according to information in the email.
