Oakland County Man Steals Tens Of Thousands From Elderly Mother: AG

Officials said the man had access to several bank accounts that belonged to his mother, who was in a residential care facility.

WALLED LAKE, MI — A Walled Lake man is in trouble after police said he stole tens of thousands of dollars from his mother who was in a residential care facility, according to the Michigan Attorney's General Office.

Matthew Rule, 40, was charged with one count of embezzlement from a vulnerable adult ($50,000-$100,000). He was arrested in Pennsylvania and placed in jail with a $100,000 bond. His next scheduled court date is set for Feb. 8.

If convicted, Rule faces up to 15 years in prison and a fine up to $15,000 or three times the value of the money or property involved, whichever is greater.

Officials said Rule had access to several bank accounts that belonged to his mother, who was in a residential care facility between March and October 2021.

Rule stole between $50,000 and $100,000 from his mother's accounts for his own uses, including purchases at Amazon, Meijer and many other retailers, officials said.

"When our elderly or vulnerable adults enter residential care, they don’t check their rights at the door," Nessel said. "My department will remain vigilant in its work to defend the rights of seniors in Michigan, and to defend them from thefts regardless of family ties between the perpetrator and victim."
